Can You Take Methylphenidate and Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN) Together?

If you’re managing both neurological and inflammatory issues—like ADHD and autoimmune symptoms—you may have heard of combining methylphenidate (e.g., Ritalin) with low-dose naltrexone (LDN). But is it safe? And can they work together?

Quick Overview

  • Methylphenidate is a stimulant that improves focus and energy by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine.

  • LDN is a low-dose opioid antagonist that boosts endorphin levels and modulates the immune system. It's used off-label for conditions like fibromyalgia, endometriosis, and autoimmune disorders. One theoretical interaction may involve LDN may inhibit dopamine release which may result in blunting effect of methylphenidate's mechanism through dopamine increase.

Are There Interactions?

No major interactions are documented. They affect the brain differently—methylphenidate via neurotransmitters, LDN via opioid receptors and immune pathways. However, both can impact mood and sleep, so it's wise to monitor how you feel.

For example, taking methylphenidate in early mornings and taking LDN with dinner [if vivid dreams are disturbing] or evening would be a sound strategy to get the most out of both medications.
